the size and weight of the power supply makes it damn stupid to put in the top.

    top heavy is just idiotic.

i'd love to see dual optical drive bays and the same basic design as the G5. it's a great design, so why the need for change in the first place...

    DAMN

so 2-3 years from now are people going to be asking "do I need a quad core or an 8 core macbook? oh yeah I'll mostly be surfing the web and maybe editing a photo once and a while"

I'll be mostly surfing the web to simultaneously stream multiple TV channels, download HD movies and video chat with friends with a live video substitution background and maybe editing a 16 Megapixel camera phone photo and the odd HD camcorder movie once in a while.

Hey, as Steve said, 128K is more than anyone will ever need...

I guess the republicans can maybe now look at the issues.

I am glad that Obama put out the papers to shut the conspiracy theorists up.

Putting the papers out has made all the people who spewed this crap look like total and complete fools; and exposed their racism for all to see and mock. :D

For all the GOPers who wouldn't tell the racist fools in your own party to drop it, you are complicit in this farce. John Boehner, I'm talking to you! Yes, it was your job. (http://www.mediaite.com/tv/speaker-boehner-its-not-my-job-to-tell-americans-that-obama-is-not-a-muslim/)

It's crap that is no longer needed.

    It's needed for me.

Look, Rosetta isn't a part of OS X by default. If it is installed, then it is needed by the user, and thus isn't "crap." If the user doesn't need it, it won't be installed. For most users, it will be "cut out." I don't see why having the option there for people who need it stifles progress.

It's going to come down to the experience, and the experience is in the apps.

Developers aren't going to create applications for the Android, unless people buy them, people are not going to buy Android tablets unless there are applications. The same thing with RIM.

Very expected. Like I said, this was going to hit the fan...

Now, we the customers are the only winners here, as Apple may be forced to reveal everything regarding its alleged monitoring of phones.

Even if that were true, so what? Apple Records was not a competitor of Apple Computer. Trademark law allows multiple companies to have the same trademark so long as they don't sell the same type of products in the same location. This is why you can have a 100 companies like "AAA Locksmith, AAA Laundry," etc. Or you can have "Hollywood Video" in Michigan being totally different than "Hollywood Video" everywhere else [interesting story that. I may have the state wrong.]

Only truly "famous" marks (e.g. Coke, McDonalds, etc.) which can be "diluted" by use with other types of products are protected against this sort of thing.

But App Store is like Coke, right? Of course it's ok if Apple does it. They've becoming one of the most hypocritical companies on the planet. Maybe Steve suffers from extreme paranoia?

Thinking it's only stored on the device and not used by Apple is naive. What's the point of logging your every location if it's not going to be used in some way.

I'm going to assume if you wipe your phone, your location data isn't lost... it will still be in Apple's possession. What else is iOS storing and sending to Apple that we don't know about? Slippery slope if you ask me.

You're right. I'm extremely unimpressed that the fastest xeon only days old is actually slower mhz for mhz than a G5 that is pushing 4 year old technology. Really sad.

However it's bizarre that AE was actually faster under rosetta. I gotta think these tests were'nt very accurrate. Don't forget that these aps were recently ported to the Intel platform. we may see optimizations and speed improvements over time. Also, they only ran one test in FCP, they should have run many more.

Video cards won't make a difference in FCP as of now if that's what you are asking performance wise. If you are using Motion/Games, anything that really feeds off the video card, then I'd go for the higher end video card.

Otherwise I'd go for the 2.6 ghz.

If Cloverton is a drop-in chip, I'd say definitely go for the 2.0 GHz as it appears to be upgradeable.

Again I am amazed at how many people here think a 4" screen is the wave of the future. It is not.

A 4" display is already the standard size.

Just because Apple has not progressed is no indicator of their plans for the upcoming model. To continue to lag behind the rest of the pack with a little display would be sad.

I heard galaxy tab is better than Ipad. Is it true??

Technically it is a safer product. No one is going to mug you for your galaxy tab.

I think im gonna wait and buy in 2007 with leopard and iLife 07

That's my plan (if I can hold out until then) ... as much as I'm dying to get my hands on an iMac right now, having an upgraded iMac and an upgraded OS will be that much better.

According to Sony's Gamecom press conference, GT5 is coming to Europe on Wednesday 3rd November (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/gran-turismo-5-arriving-in-europe-on-november-3/), the day after its US release.

Recap of last twelve months. "We've got plenty of cool new products to release over the next few months that we're really excited about and we hope you will be too."
Leopard. "We've fixed the Finder. Boom!"
Mac Pro. "The fastest personal computer ever!"
XServe (possibly). "Already being installed at Virginia Tech."
    "See you soon!"

<me fumbles for credit card to order Mac Pro>

AnandTech is putting a lot of emphasis on this FB-DIMM issue. Their Conroe vs Xeon comparisons are poor given that they maximize the FB-DIMM latency "problem" by using a Mac Pro with only two RAM slots occupied. Seems as though they have an agenda to exaggerate the importance of this technical issue.

I have noticed this emphasis as well; not being an expert on this issue myself though, would you care to shed light on how their coverage is an exaggeration and why we shouldn't be worried about it?

The comments about separate platforms in the NT era I took to refer to NT3.x/4 vs Win9x.

Yes, this is what I was getting at. ("arse about face"? What is that, Swedish? ). Noone other than a vintage Windows IT person would know there were further differences between versions of NT itself. Also when making comparisons I never mentioned Server 2003 (about which I know almost nothing); I was talking about XP and 2000 being relatively similar whereas, for example NT and 98 were not.

    New micro-arch -- Nehalem is due 2008.

Really, completely new? As in, to Core 2 what the G5 was to G4? In just two years?? I guess they're really ramping things up... Core 3 Hexa Mac Pros, anyone?

All of the reviews of the Core 2 Duo say that it crushes AMD in the desktop arena. This is good news, now we just need new iMacs, MacBook Pros, and Mac Pros.
